Itinerary:

Since ancient times, Thessaloniki has been a major commercial centre for not only Greece, but also for the entire Balkan region. And today, while it is a very modern city, it still retains a strong sense of its history. Contemporary buildings sit comfortably alongside age-old monuments, and memories from Byzantium are very much alive, as more people discover the wonder of Thessaloniki travel experiences.

This Thessaloniki walking tour will take you through the hidden local markets. Here you’ll discover local artisans producing fine jewelry, and leather, copper and bronze products, in a traditional way. Be surprised by how many professions from the past are in fact still preserved in this fascinating city.

The Thessaloniki tour adventure will start in famous Aristotelous Square. Passing through one of the busiest commercial areas of the city, you will visit Louloudadika – the flower shop centre – and have the chance to admire the Turkish baths of Giahoudi Hamam. With a history that dates back to the 12th century, a walk in the open-air markets, Modiano and Kapani, will be an unforgettable experience. Fish, fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy products, traditional butchers, and spices from the east create a setting that vividly evokes the past.

Nearby is the Chalkeon market, where you’ll have the chance to meet coppersmiths who still preserve their traditional profession. Walk through the Student’s market before travelling back in time at the Paliatzidika market. Continue on to lively Bit Pazar, an area with a history that dates back to 1928. It’ll no doubt be a great opportunity to get some unique Thessaloniki travel photos.

Your exploration through the hidden markets of Thessaloniki will end in Ladadika, a place that is famous for its role in trading oil. Memories from those years will come alive as your local expert guide leads you through its atmospheric paved alleys while explaining its history. Nowadays, Ladadika is a place where you can find some of the city’s best cafes, restaurants and bars. As our Thessaloniki walking tour finishes here, why not take the opportunity to linger longer and lunch at one of Ladadika’s eateries? A great way to end your morning tour through Thessaloniki’s markets.
