The city protector

The 26th of October is a very important day and a double celebration for Thessaloniki, as it is the day of Agios Dimitrios (Saint Demetrius), the patron saint of the city and also the day that the Greek army entered Thessaloniki, in 1912.

There are many myths and stories dating back to the Byzantine years, on how Agios Dimitrios protected his temple and his city – and there are many holy icons with this theme

Whenever the city was in great danger, Demetrius was there riding his horse, encouraging the city protectors and terrifying the enemies!

On the 26th of October 1912, the people of Thessaloniki saw Agios Dimitrios riding on the city’s castles – It was the day that the Greek army entered Thessaloniki….
